How it works

How the milk rate is calculated

This calculator uses the two-rate kg method: your dairy sets one price per kilogram of fat and another per kilogram of SNF (solids-not-fat). The litres you deliver are converted into kilograms of fat and SNF, each is multiplied by its rate, and the two amounts are added together.

Many cooperatives use a FAT/SNF rate chart instead — a table that maps each FAT–SNF combination to a price per litre. The two approaches give very similar results; the kg method is simply the formula behind most charts. For the full explanation with a worked example, read How to calculate milk rate from FAT and SNF.

In Dairy Giant, none of this is typed by hand: FAT/SNF readings come straight from the connected milk analyzer, the weight from the electronic scale, and your rate chart is applied automatically — so every farmer receipt shows litres, FAT, SNF, rate and amount, instantly and transparently.

Milk rate calculation, answered

With the two-rate kg method: Fat kg = Litres × Fat% ÷ 100 and SNF kg = Litres × SNF% ÷ 100. The amount payable is (Fat kg × rate per kg fat) + (SNF kg × rate per kg SNF), and the rate per litre is that amount divided by the litres. Your dairy or union sets the two per-kg rates.
Each dairy, cooperative or milk union publishes its own procurement rates, and they change with season and market. The ₹400/kg fat and ₹120/kg SNF pre-filled here are illustrative only — replace them with the rates your dairy has announced.
Use Richmond's formula: SNF % = (CLR ÷ 4) + (0.25 × Fat %) + constant (commonly 0.44 in India, but unions adopt their own value). Our free SNF calculator does this for you.
Yes. Dairy management software like Dairy Giant reads FAT/SNF from the milk analyzer and weight from the scale, applies your rate chart automatically and prints the farmer's receipt on the spot — no manual calculation, no disputes. Book a free demo to see it live.
